Madrid, Spain, 10 May 2018 - The 44th meeting of the UNWTO Regional Commission for the Middle East, organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Ministry of Tourism of the Arab Republic of Egypt (Sharm el Sheikh, 8-9 May 2018), focused on innovation and digital transformation. It was followed by this year’s UNWTO Regional Conference, which highlighted the importance of tourism’s labour market performance under the theme “Human Capital Development in Tourism: New Perspectives”.

26 April 2018 Joint EU-UNWTO Report Provides Better Understanding of Tourism in the European Union
Madrid, Spain, 26 April 2018 - The new report ‘European Union Tourism Trends’, prepared by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in cooperation with the European Commission, underscores tourism’s major social and economic benefits for 28 countries comprising the European Union (EU). EU destinations welcomed 538 million international overnight visitors in 2017, 40% of the world total. EU accommodation establishments provide over 3 billion nights a year, half of which to domestic guests (residents) and half to international guests. Tourism accounts for 6% of the EU’s overall exports, while the direct contribution of tourism to individual EU economies reaches up to 11% of the GDP.
23 April 2018 Strong outbound tourism demand from both traditional and emerging markets in 2017
Madrid, Spain, 23 April 2018 - Virtually all source markets reported higher tourism spending in 2017, reflecting continued strong demand for international tourism across all world regions. Both emerging and advanced economies fuelled growth, led by the United States which spent US$ 12 billion more on travel abroad. China spent US$ 8 billion more, consolidating its leadership as the biggest spender in the world. The Russian Federation spent US$ 7 billion more and Brazil US$ 5 billion more, both rebounding from weaker spending in previous years. Strong tourism expenditure reflects enhanced connectivity, increased visa facilitation and a global economic upswing.

Madrid, Spain 11 April 2018 - An intense week of exchange of experiences and capacity building linked to wildlife and biodiversity protection has taken place in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A major result of the regional initiative that lies under the framework of the UNWTO/Chimelong Programme on Wildlife and Sustainable Tourism has been the Declaration of Kinshasa that addresses poaching and carbon footprint as major concerns of the sector.
10 April 2018 World Tourism Organization and FC Barcelona sign collaboration agreement
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and FC Barcelona signed an agreement on Saturday, opening the path to collaboration between the two organizations in the areas of tourism and sports. The agreement was signed by UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili and the President of FC Barcelona, Josep Maria Bartomeu.
