International tourist arrivals grew by 4% between January and August 2012 compared to the same period of 2011 according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. The resilience of international tourism in a continuing uncertain economy is further confirmed by the positive data on tourism earnings and expenditure.

17 October 2012 UNWTO opens two new Sustainable Tourism Observatories in China
The Kanas Lake Nature Reserve in the extreme north-west of China and the city of Chengdu, one of China’s most populous cities, are the locations of two new UNWTO Sustainable Tourism Observatories designed to monitor the environmental, social and economic impacts of tourism. 
15 October 2012 UNWTO launches Global Partnership for the Hotel Industry
UNWTO has launched, in cooperation with representatives of leading international, regional and national hotel associations, a Global Partnership for the Hotel Industry aimed to bring the industry together to share best practices and find common positions on issues such as hotel quality, distribution or major consumer trends (Madrid, Spain, October 4, 2012).
