7 February 2018 Fernando Hierro, new UNWTO Ambassador for Responsible Tourism
  International football star Fernando Hierro has been named Ambassador for Responsible Tourism in a meeting held today at the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), with its Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili.
29 January 2018 UNWTO/Chimelong Initiative trains public officials in Bangladesh on Wildlife and Sustainable Tourism
30 officials from different ministries of Bangladesh have participated in a workshop to enhance their knowledge and share good practices on Sustainable Tourism and Wildlife. The activity takes place under the framework of the UNWTO/Chimelong Initiative on wildlife and sustainable tourism, which is being implemented between 2017 and 2018. 
25 January 2018 UNWTO Secretary-General appoints Mr. Shanzhong Zhu as UNWTO Executive Director
UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili appointed Mr. Shanzhong Zhu as Executive Director of UNWTO. Mr. Zhu, a Chinese national, began his two-year term on 1 January 2018. Mr. Zhu joined UNWTO in 2014 as Executive Director. Prior to his appointment he was Vice Chairman of China National Tourism Administration (CNTA).  
24 January 2018 Innovation and training on the agenda of UNWTO Secretary-General visit to Portugal
Innovation and training were at the centre of the official visit of Zurab Pololikashvili, the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), to Portugal on 22-23 January. Following meetings with the Portuguese President, Prime Minister, Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as representatives from the private sector, a joint training and innovation action plan was agreed between UNWTO and Portugal. On the occasion, the Alentejo Sustainable Tourism Observatory joined the UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO).

Seven companies and one association formalized their commitment to the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism during an event held in the context of FITUR, the International Tourism Fair of Madrid.
19 January 2018 Middle East & North Africa tourism consolidates recovery
International tourism in the Middle East and North Africa showed clear signs of recovery in 2017 with growths of 5% and 13%, respectively. Against this backdrop, tourism ministers, Spanish authorities and private sector gathered to discuss future tourism prospects at the Ministerial Round Table on Tourism Development in the MENA Region, during the Madrid International Tourism Fair in Spain (18 January, FITUR Madrid).
18 January 2018 Initiatives from Portugal, Spain, India and Indonesia winners of UNWTO Awards for Innovation in Tourism
Turismo de Portugal I.P (Portugal), Ecotourism Trust (India), Tryponyu (Indonesia) and SEGITTUR (Spain) are the winners of the 14th Edition of the UNWTO Awards for Innovation in Tourism.   Fourteen projects among 128 applicants from 55 countries were selected as finalists of the 14th UNWTO Awards for Innovation in Tourism.

Nearly 30 African Tourism ministers convened at INVESTOUR to debate and exchange experiences on the development of the sector in the continent. This unique Tourism Investment and Business Forum for Africa is jointly organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Casa Africa and FITUR.
15 January 2018 2017 International Tourism Results: the highest in seven years
International tourist arrivals grew by a remarkable 7% in 2017 to reach a total of 1,322 million, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. This strong momentum is expected to continue in 2018 at a rate of 4%-5%.
