UNWTO Executive Council session opens in Málaga
Málaga is hosting the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) until Wednesday, 11 May. Attending the session are some 300 representatives from 50 countries, including 17 ministers and secretaries of tourism (Argentina, Azerbaijan, Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Spain, Ghana, Jamaica, Namibia, Kenya, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Serbia, South Africa and Zimbabwe).The opening ceremony held yesterday was presided over by the Secretary-General of the UNWTO, Taleb Rifai; the Secretary of State for Tourism of Spain, Isabel Borrego; the Mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre; the President of the Provincial Council of Málaga, Elias Bendodo; and the Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Francisco Javier Fernandez Hernandez.

World Committee on Tourism Ethics: it is critical to advance the transformation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism into an international convention
The 17th meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics, held at the UNWTO Headquarters in Madrid, Spain on 26-27 April 2016 discussed the advances in the process of conversion of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism into an international convention and reiterated the importance of transforming the Code into legally binding international law.

Ceremony for the adoption of the agreement on the establishment of the International ST-EP Organization takes place in Seoul
The ceremony for the adoption of the agreement on the establishment of the International ST-EP Organization took place in Seoul, Republic of Korea with the presence of tourism ministers, ambassadors and senior officials from 40 countries. The event was attended by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea, Kim Jongdeok, the Second Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cho Tae-yul, UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai as well as the Chairperson of the ST-EP Foundation, Amb. Dho Young-shim (28 March, 2016).

Exports from international tourism rise 4% in 2015
International tourism receipts in destinations around the world grew by 3.6% in 2015, in line with the 4.4% increase in international arrivals. For the fourth consecutive year, international tourism grew faster than world merchandise trade, raising tourism’s share in world’s exports to 7% in 2015. The total export value from international tourism amounted to US$ 1.4 trillion.

UNWTO Silk Road Task Force commits to work on joint marketing, training, infrastructure development and visa facilitation
The 6th UNWTO Silk Road Task Force Meeting held in Urmia, Islamic Republic of Iran on 22-25 April 2016, agreed to advance joint marketing, training, infrastructure development and visa facilitation. The Meeting brought together representatives from 14 countries to discuss the key priorities for the Silk Road Action Plan 2016/2017.

The World Tourism Organization and the Leading Brands of Spain Forum Develop the First Prototype for Wine Tourism
The project’s initial progress was presented for the first time at the exhibit Alimentaria 2016, which recently held its 40th edition in Barcelona. The initiative is based on the UNWTO prototype methodology for international application. Five of the great Spanish wineries, members of the Leading Brands of Spain Forum, are participating in this project. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in collaboration with the Leading Brands of Spain Forum (FMRE), is developing a model for the promotion of wine tourism. The initiative is based on a prototype for wine tourism in which the wineries Barbadillo, González & Byass, Freixenet Group, Osborne and Pagos del Rey participate.

African tourism ministers convene in Côte d’Ivoire
Over three days (19-21 April) high-level tourism representatives from African countries, including 18 tourism ministers1, are convening in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to discuss the challenges of the sector and the priorities for the programme of work of UNWTO in the African continent. The event is held in parallel with the Sustainable Tourism Conference of the 10 YFP, focused on ‘Accelerating the Shift towards Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns’.

Peru to host 2nd UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism
On 27-29 April, Lima becomes the international capital of gastronomy tourism as it hosts the 2nd UNWTO World Forum on this dynamic tourism segment. The event is organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Basque Culinary Center and the Government of Peru, through PromPeru.
