First World Conference on Tourism for Development: Premier Li of China calls for higher financing for development in tourism
The role of tourism in fighting poverty and building peace were the key focus of the First World Conference on Tourism for Development. Opening the conference, Premier Li Keqiang underlined the role of tourism in lifting people out of poverty and the importance of stepping up international cooperation in tourism. The event, organized by UNWTO and the Government of the People’s Republic of China, gathered in Beijing 1000 participants from over 100 countries.

1st World Conference on Tourism for Development opens this week in Beijing
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Government of the People’s Republic of China will host the First World Conference on Tourism for Development on 19 May. Under the theme ‘Tourism for Peace and Development’, the event is the first high-level meeting to address how tourism can contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 universal goals.

Security, travel facilitation, sustainability and new technologies among priorities addressed by UNWTO Executive Council
With the attendance by more than 300 representatives from 50 countries, including 17 ministers and secretaries of tourism, the 103rd session of the UNWTO Executive Council concluded on Wednesday. The session took place during a key time for the sector as it continues on its upward growth trend, already accounting for 7 per cent of total world exports.

UNWTO Executive Council session opens in Málaga
Málaga is hosting the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) until Wednesday, 11 May. Attending the session are some 300 representatives from 50 countries, including 17 ministers and secretaries of tourism (Argentina, Azerbaijan, Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Spain, Ghana, Jamaica, Namibia, Kenya, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Serbia, South Africa and Zimbabwe).The opening ceremony held yesterday was presided over by the Secretary-General of the UNWTO, Taleb Rifai; the Secretary of State for Tourism of Spain, Isabel Borrego; the Mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre; the President of the Provincial Council of Málaga, Elias Bendodo; and the Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Francisco Javier Fernandez Hernandez.

World Committee on Tourism Ethics: it is critical to advance the transformation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism into an international convention
The 17th meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics, held at the UNWTO Headquarters in Madrid, Spain on 26-27 April 2016 discussed the advances in the process of conversion of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism into an international convention and reiterated the importance of transforming the Code into legally binding international law.

The ceremony for the adoption of the agreement on the establishment of the International ST-EP Organization took place in Seoul, Republic of Korea with the presence of tourism ministers, ambassadors and senior officials from 40 countries. The event was attended by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea, Kim Jongdeok, the Second Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cho Tae-yul, UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai as well as the Chairperson of the ST-EP Foundation, Amb. Exports from international tourism rise 4% in 2015
International tourism receipts in destinations around the world grew by 3.6% in 2015, in line with the 4.4% increase in international arrivals. For the fourth consecutive year, international tourism grew faster than world merchandise trade, raising tourism’s share in world’s exports to 7% in 2015. The total export value from international tourism amounted to US$ 1.4 trillion.
